Cloth Diapers

So I realized I started this post back in December and never finished or published it.  I figured I would find time to do just that now!
Back when I was pregnant, we started considering using cloth diapers...you're proabably reading and thinking CRAZY!  Well at least that was most people's thoughts and comments were like when we talked about it.  Even my mom was like, "what?"  My typical response is, cloth diapers are not what they used to be...in fact they are very similar in design to how you would use a disposable diaper.  Karis wore disposable diapers for the first 7 weeks or so of her life (mostly because we were given a ton of newborn diapers AND because she was so little to fit into the cloth diapers).  Once we got to the point where we transitioned into the cloth diapers, I admit, I was a little nervous as to how things would pan out.  Well, I can safely say we are well into the use of the cloth diapers and we are VERY PLEASED with our decision to use cloth diapers!  Some of the things I really like about them:
  • She never "exploads" out of cloth diapers (of course this pertains to how her digestion was at the beginning)
  • They are easy to wash
  • Karis doesn't get diaper rashes in the cloth diapers (with the exceptin of a couple occasions when she ate the wrong food-allergic reaction and constant bowel movements during teething)
  • Cost comparison to disposable diapers
  • Since she is still little, she hasn't moved up into the next size yet-the cloth diapers we use will 'grow' as she grows.  She is currently on the second size snaps and they still fit great!
Now I understand cloth diapers are not for everyone and that's ok!  You have to make the best decision for your family.

Of course there have been a few moments where I knew it would have been easier to go with disposables (such as when we travel for any length of time and do not have access to a washer...and in that case I do take along disposables).  It is also a time commitment and planning out so you don't get so low you run out before washing them (it helps to have 22 diapers and I wash them every other day).  In those moments where I wish I didn't have to wash or stuff diapers (yet again) that I remind myself we're saving A LOT of money by making this decision.

As you can tell they were a little big on her but they still worked great!

You can dry the outer shell of the diaper in the dryer
but they will last longer if you air dry (plus the sun helps get out any stains)

Steve even jumps in to help wash them!

I don't normally let her go without pants, but it was a particularly
hot day out this day-so it's always nice to have a diaper to match!

Over the past several months I've noticed several of my friends have been interested in doing cloth for their children and it's been fun to offer insight from my experience.  Like I said, I know this route is not for everyone, but we have really enjoyed the diapers...and I say WE because Steve would say the same thing!
